Terms of Service
Effective date: May 29, 2026
Welcome to Relay. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Relay website, desktop application, and related services (collectively, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use Relay. If you are under 18, you confirm that you have permission from a parent or legal guardian.
You may not use the Service if you are barred from receiving it under the laws of your jurisdiction.
2. Your Account
Registration
To use Relay you create an account with a username, email, and password. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it current. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.
Security
Keep your password confidential. Notify us immediately if you believe your account has been compromised. We are not liable for losses resulting from unauthorized use of your account.
One Account Per Person
Each individual may maintain only one personal account. Bot accounts and integration accounts are permitted via the developer portal.
3. User Conduct
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Post content that is illegal, harassing, hateful, threatening, or sexually exploits minors
- Distribute malware, spam, or unsolicited promotional content
- Impersonate any person, entity, or Relay staff
- Attempt to access another user's account or circumvent security measures
- Reverse-engineer, scrape, or interfere with the Service's normal operation
- Use the Service to organize or facilitate real-world harm
- Violate any applicable law or third-party rights
Server owners are responsible for moderating their own communities. Relay reserves the right to remove content, suspend accounts, or take down servers that violate these Terms.
4. Your Content
Ownership
You retain all rights to the content you create, upload, or share through Relay ("User Content"). We do not claim ownership of your User Content.
License You Grant Us
By submitting User Content, you grant Relay a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, transmit, display, and otherwise process that content solely as necessary to operate, improve, and provide the Service. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for content already shared with other users (which may remain in their copies).
Responsibility
You are solely responsible for your User Content and the consequences of sharing it. You represent that you have all rights necessary to post the content you submit.
5. Servers and Communities
Servers are owned by the user who created them. As a server owner you are responsible for setting moderation policies, configuring roles, and ensuring members follow these Terms within your server.
Public servers may be listed in Relay's discovery directory and indexed by search engines. You control visibility through the server settings.
6. Bots and Developer Apps
You may build bots and applications that integrate with Relay via the developer portal. By doing so you agree to:
- Only request the OAuth scopes and permissions your app actually needs
- Secure your client secret and bot token; do not share them publicly
- Not use the API to evade rate limits, scrape user data, or build spam tools
- Respect the privacy of users who authorize your application
We may revoke API access for any application that violates these Terms or our developer policies.
7. Voice and Video
Voice and video calls are routed through third-party infrastructure. Relay does not record calls unless you explicitly enable a recording feature. Other participants in a call may be able to record audio or video through their own devices. By joining a call, you accept that risk.
8. Payments and Premium Features
Most of Relay is free to use. If we introduce paid features or subscriptions, the terms for those purchases will be presented at checkout. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. Refunds are provided in accordance with applicable consumer protection law.
9. Data We Collect and How We Use It
Account Information
We collect your email address, username, and password hash when you register. If you sign in with Google or Discord we receive your name, email, and profile picture from that provider. You are not required to provide your real name.
Usage and Analytics
We collect data about how you use the Service, including messages sent, servers joined, and feature interactions. This data is used to operate and improve Relay and is never sold or shared with advertisers.
IP Address and Country
When you log in or create an account, we use your IP address to determine your country of residence (country-level only). This country code is stored on your account and used solely for aggregate analytics — for example, understanding which regions Relay is growing in. We do not store your raw IP address long-term, we do not track your precise location, and we will never share or sell this information to any third party.
No Sale of Personal Data
We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party. We do not show you targeted advertising and we do not use your data for any purpose other than operating and improving Relay.
Data Retention
Account data is retained for as long as your account exists. You may request deletion of your account at any time through user settings. Deleted accounts are purged within 30 days. Aggregate analytics data that cannot be traced back to an individual may be retained indefinitely.
Staff Access to Private Messages
Relay staff may access the content of direct messages and group direct messages strictly for the purpose of investigating user reports of abuse, harassment, illegal content, or other violations of these Terms. Such access is limited to what is reasonably necessary to investigate and resolve the reported matter. All staff access to private message content is logged internally and subject to our internal privacy and conduct policies. Staff will not access private messages for any other purpose.
10. Termination
By You
You may stop using the Service at any time. You can delete your account through the user settings; this removes your profile and disassociates your messages from your username (messages may persist in other users' channels as required for the integrity of those conversations).
By Us
We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, if your account poses a security or legal risk to Relay or other users, or if required by law. Where reasonable we will notify you of the action and the reason.
11. Service Availability
Relay is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis during beta. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time, with or without notice. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access or that the Service will be free of bugs or errors.
12. Disclaimer of Warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will meet your requirements, be secure, uninterrupted, or error-free.
13. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Relay and its affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service.
Our total liability for any claim related to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) one hundred US dollars.
14. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Relay, its officers, employees, and affiliates from any claim, demand, or damage (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your User Content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective date" above and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email. Continued use of the Service after the changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
16. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts located in the United States, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
